The IP5, comprising the world’s five largest intellectual property offices, met in Seoul on June 20 for their 17th annual meeting. These offices – EPO, JPO, KIPO, CNIPA, and USPTO – handle about 85% of global patent applications. They reaffirmed their commitment to creating inclusive IP systems that support UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting, chaired by KIPO Acting Commissioner Kim Shi-Hyeong, focused on aligning initiatives with their new vision statement adopted in Honolulu. Key topics included IP’s role in supporting UN SDGs, creating a user-friendly patent landscape, and addressing AI-driven technological developments. EPO Vice-President Nellie Simon emphasized collaboration to foster inclusivity. She highlighted the need to support underrepresented groups like SMEs, individual inventors, women, and youth. The IP5 shared initiatives to help these groups leverage IP for growth.
The offices agreed to develop “Guidelines for Building a Sustainable Future” to implement their vision. They also endorsed an “IP5 Project Review” to focus resources on tangible results for stakeholders. Technical cooperation discussions covered global assignment, harmonization of drawing features, e-signatures, and AI integration. The offices approved outcomes of AI-related projects, including examination practices for AI inventions.
In conjunction with the annual meeting, the 14th International IP Protection Conference explored IP and AI topics. The IP5 also met with industry associations from their regions to discuss support for innovative SMEs and technical cooperation efforts. Lastly, the IP5 outlined plans to improve their website, aiming to enhance communication with stakeholders and promote awareness of their initiatives.
